Tragedy
tomorrow, Comedy tonight!
Broadways greatest farce is light, fast-paced,
witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. Forum takes
comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000-year-old
comedies of the Roman playwright, Plautus, with the infectious energy of classic
vaudeville. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Psuedolus)
struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted Courtesan (Philia) for
his young master (Hero), in exchange for his freedom.

"A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" opened
in May 1962 with the zany Zero Mostel as Pseudolus,
the freedom-seeking slave. It had a wonderful revival in
the late 1990s with Nathan Lane, then Whoopi Goldberg,
at the helm.
The dramaturgy had
our Cast forming families, taking Roman names, creating
Roman Coronaes, and reporting to the entire populus about
an aspect of Roman life. Training was provided in the development
of performance skills and in technical theater skills.
The SBYT company is exposed to all aspects of performance
such as acting styles, vocal development and movement for
the stage, understanding the components of technical theatre
from exposure to assistant directing, stage management,
props, lighting, and set design. |
|
| The
Roman citizens are constantly in motion. The true
essence of farce, "Forum" has the characters whiz
from one ridiculous situation to another with an array of hilarious
subplots and hysterical complications. |
