SBYT's Artistic Director,
Deanne Anders,
recently took her educational approach to quality production
to the new desert campus of Xavier College Preparatory
High School, the recently opened Jesuit high school in
Palm Desert, California. Working with all freshman (the
only class at the school) she brought a serio-comic production
of John Lennon and Me by Cherie Bennett to life.
A
multiple-national-award winning, uproarious play about
life, death, power, and first boyfriends. Hollywood-wannabe
Star (Crystal Guiterrez), the ultimate Beatles fan, has
her plans stymied by cystic fibrosis, an inherited disease
that assures a young death. She spends most of her time
in the hospital, where she confronts fate with imagination,
surrounding herself with MTV-inspired bodyguard “Flunkies” and
morphing her dreaded therapy nurse into a pro wrestler.
Enter
Courtney (Clare O'Flynn), Star’s new roommate,
and Star’s polar opposite — a pretty and popular
cheerleader who is apparently not seriously sick.
Neither girl knows much about the other’s world,
but slowly they come to understand each other, and ultimately,
themselves, in this powerful play about living life to
the fullest.
The
play was presented at the Indian Wells Theater on the
CSUSB Palm Desert campus, May 3-5, 2007.
